Of the currently identified 17 America species of deciduous azaleas (species now classified within the Rhododendron genus), Georgia can claim 12 as native, more than any other state. William Bartram called the flame azalea, “this most celebrated species of Azalea … certainly the most gay and brilliant flowering shrub yet known.” By properly choosing species, one can have blooms from April to September; a color palate from white, pink, lavender, yellow, orange, red, and all colors in between; spicy or sweet fragrance in some species; and habits from low (2’) to tall (20’ ). More gardeners and landscapers should be planting our easy-to-grow native azaleas.
Speaker: Charles Andrews, Vice President, Azalea Society of America
A retired GA Tech engineer, Charles Andrews’ life-long hobby of trout fishing in the mountains of North Georgia first provided the olfactory and visual excitement of discovering American azaleas in the wild, a subject about which he has challenged himself to learn everything possible. He is currently writing a book on the history and characteristics of our American azaleas.
