Starting in late 2015, the City of Decatur instituted a High Performance Building Ordinance, which requires all new residential and commercial buildings to be certified under an existing green building program. Other Georgia communities are considering similar building standards with an eye towards sustainability and environmental benefits. Despite their benefits, could high performance building standards have drawbacks, such as stifling innovation? Should green buidling be mandated by policy, or should it be largely driven by consumer demand?
