Lunch & Learn - August 2018
Gaga for Paw Paws

Paw paws (Asimina triloba) are almost mythic. Paw paws are an understory tree native to Georgia (a growing region extending to the Mid-Atlantic and Midwest), and yet many people still find this tree to be unfamiliar and foreign. The delicious custard-like fruits of this tree ripen in September and October, but do not last long on the produce shelf – if they can even be found commercially.

Come learn about the history, cultivation, and best practices for growing this peculiar tree from this month's Lunch & Learn facilitator, Jared Walker, a Georgia Master Naturalist and backyard horticulturalist with a passion for the pawpaw. If the stars align, you might even get to taste a sample!

Jared Walker grew up playing in the woods along the Chattahoochee River and grows paw paws (and many other edible trees) in his big back yard in greater Atlanta. Jared is a member of the GA Native Plant society and earned a Georgia Master Naturalist certification from Elachee Nature Center in North GA. Jared is a trained Trees Atlanta walking tour docent.

This class qualifies for CEUs: 1.0 ISA Certified Arborists, 1.0 Municipal Specialists, 0.5 BCMA - Management. ISA log available for attendees upon completion of class. It is the responsibility of the student to request ISA forms and provide their ISA correct certification number.
