"Forest Stewardship" includes three classes that meets once per month in October, November, and December. Participants will learn in classroom and outdoor locations. The goal of the program is to introduce practical concepts for identifying native versus invasive plants, basic science of their environmental impact, methods for controlling invasive (or aggressive) species, and replanting for long-term sustainability.
Specific content may change per class, but the themes of each class are indicated below. Attendance at all three classes are required to receive a certificate of completion.
Saturday, October 20: Plant Identification - Native vs. Non-Native
Saturday, November 17: Removal Techniques, Timing, Guidelines
Saturday, December 15: Restoration - Replanting, Selections, Sustainability
Optional: After completing this class, you will be be eligible to earn "Certified Volunteer" designation upon completion of volunteer service leadership requirements. Certified Volunteer (CV) represents significant volunteer achievement for specific areas of expertise or leadership. Detail for Certified Volunteer status will be covered in class, including how CVs may organize projects within their neighborhood in partnership with Trees Atlanta.
*Need-based scholarships are available for community residents who are working in collaboration with their neighborhood associations or other conservation group. Requirements include organizing and/or leading one or more Invasive Removal projects in their community. Please contact treehouse@treesatlanta.org if you need to request a fee waiver for further information.
The TreeHouse is located in a popular eating and commercial area in Inman Park. Our building is on the Atlanta BeltLine Eastside Trail between Edgewood Avenue and Irwin Street. We encourage you to be mindful of potential traffic and limited parking in this popular in town location. Please consider walking, biking, or public transit.
