Designing functional ecosystem social structures is the essence of good forest garden design. This full-day, intermediate-to-advanced design workshop is for professionals and other folks seeking practical information on how to design effective food forest polycultures: mixed plantings of useful perennial plants.

Effective polycultures combine plants in ways that maximize yields, and minimize both competition and the gardener’s work and other inputs needed. In this workshop, we’ll work with the ecological theories behind this most interesting and challenging part of forest garden design. How do the social structures of ecosystems operate, and how can we mimic them? How might we design effective polycultures and the guilds (sets of relationships between flora and fauna) that make polycultures work well?

Dave Jacke will guide participants through lectures, games, exercises, and discussions intended to shift your way of seeing and thinking while giving you practical tools for your own forest garden design efforts of all sizes and contexts. Participants will practice creating a small-scale design, including an ordering list.

Lunch and materials are included in this workshop.
Participants may order Dave Jacke’s award-winning, 2-volume book
Edible Forest Gardens directly from his website

Seats for this workshop are limited. A 50% discount for this workshop is offered for participants who also register for the 2019 Atlanta Canopy Conference. You may add on the Friday workshop during your online conference registration.

Dave Jacke is this year’s Opening Keynote Speaker at the Trees Atlanta 2019 Atlanta Canopy Conference: Food Forest Revolution. Please also view more information on registering for the Conference (Thurs., 2/14/19) and a free pre-conference Speaker Series (Wed., 2/13/19).
